UFA Declares Contract Impasse
On Tuesday, August 10th , more than 50 New York City Firefighters came to the steps of City Hall to join UFA President Steve Cassidy and members of the UFA Executive Board in declaring an impasse in contract negotiations with the City. The City is offering New York's Bravest 4 percent over 3-years (1% in Year 1; 2% in Year 2; and 1% in Year 3) - which is unacceptable. Click HERE to read the UFA Press Release.

Repairs to Firehouse Fax Machines
In accordance with Dept Order #65 of 2004, if your firehouse is not receiving important fax notices due to problems with your house's fax machine, call 718-999-1305 for repairs. You must provide the following information: Name, unit, address, make, model, serial # and description of problem.

Collection Agencies for LOD Injury Medical Bills?
Any member who is receiving notices from collection agencies demanding payment for Line-of-Duty Injury medical bills for services that were provided with authorization of the Medical Office should fax all notices to the UFA Recording Secretary's Office, Attn: Joe Miccio at 212-683-4359. The UFA has raised this issue with the Dept, which has acknowledged the seriousness of the problem. Make sure your name, company and date of injury are included with the fax.

Grievance Win re: Fire Marshals Working as FFs
UFA Fire Marshal Representative Lester Layne and Recording Secretary Joe Miccio report that Arbitrator Maurice Benewitz has ruled that Fire Marshals who are assigned to firefighting duties in the future will be entitled to RSOT. The Award reads as follows: "The Fire Dept did violate AUC 287 by not offering Fire Marshals detailed back to the firehouse to perform firefighting duties the opportunity to work RSOT."

Security Benefit Fund Notification re: New Drug Cards
As you know, Eckerd Health Services (EHS), mailed new prescription drug cards to all eligible UFA members along with a description of the plan which takes effect September 1, 2004. The UFA has already received 2 cartons of membership cards returned by the Post Office because of incorrect addresses. In order to keep records correct, and insure that all Firefighters receive their new prescription drug card, it is IMPERATIVE that Firefighters who have not received their new card contact the UFA Security Benefit Fund (212) 683-4723, FAX (212) 683-0693) and update their information! Please DO NOT FORGET to notify the Security Benefit Fund of any change of ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, MARITAL STATUS, OR NEW BIRTHS!!!

Battalion 18 Memorial Services
On September 11, 2004, members of Battalion 18 will host the third annual memorial services in honor of our fallen brothers at the Firefighters' Memorial Monument on Riverside Drive and 100th Street (upper west side of Manhattan). Free Premiere Screening of HBO Sports Film
HBO, The Bryant Park Restoration Corporation and the NYC Sports Commission invite everyone to a free premiere screening on Tuesday, August 17 2004 (at sunset, approx. 8:30PM) in Bryant Park (42nd St. & 6th Ave.) of the HBO Sports Presentation "Nine Innings From Ground Zero," about the role baseball played in New York's recovery after the tragedy of September 11. Firehouse Cooks Challenge NYC's Top Chefs
Come out for an evening of good food, fun and music at September Space's 3rd Annual Iron Skillet Cook Off. Some of FDNY's top chefs will compete against NYC's finest chefs. This year's event takes place Monday October 4, 2004 at 7:00pm at Strata Restaurant, 915 Broadway at 21st Street. Proceeds go to September Space, a community center and support network for rescue and relief workers, volunteers and all those impacted by the attacks on the World Trade Center. Big Mike Golf Classic
The Big Mike Golf Classic honoring Lieutenant Michael F. Lynch (L-4, E-54, BAT 9) will take place on September 13 2004 at North Hempstead Country Club in Port Washington NY. Proceeds will go to the Michael F. Lynch Scholarship Fund which provides tuition assistance to needy students in Michael and his sister Maureen's memory. FF Andre Fletcher Street Renaming
The street renaming for FF Andre Fletcher which was supposed to take place on August 28 2004 has been rescheduled for September 25 2004 and the ceremony will be conducted in front of 154 New York Avenue, Freeport NY 11520 at 1300 hours. 3-on-3 Memorial Basketball Tournament
On Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 10:00am, Canarsie's Bravest presents the third A-Team Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament to benefit the A-Team Scholarship Fund in memory of Lt. Joseph Cavalieri, FF Chris Bopp, and FF James Bohan who made the Supreme Sacrifice while operating at Brooklyn Box 33-4080 on Dec. 18, 1998. Event will take place at Riis Park in the Rockaways. Entry Fee is $150 per team and includes 5 t-shirts per team, food, beer, soda and barbeque.
