UFA Safety Message #01 - Turning Out Apparatus

UFA Health & Safety Officer / Sgt.-at-Arms Bill Romaka wishes to remind the Membership to take their safety responsibilities seriously at all times. We will continue to highlight and remind our members of “safe actions” as spelled out by the Department. Stay well, and stay safe!

The FDNY Safety Bulletin #6, “Precautions to Ensure a Safe Response to Alarms” states the following:

3.2 Considerations for a Safe Response From Quarters:

  • 3.2.1 Members, properly dressed for fire duty, shall be assigned to proceed to the front of quarters to warn pedestrians and vehicular traffic. At night, members are to use flashlights. All members, except officer, chauffeur and tillerman (if tiller apparatus), shall board apparatus outside of quarters.

  • 3.2.3 The officer shall also visually ascertain that the required members are outside quarters in proper position. Members positions outside quarters shall be consistent with safety. Members are not to enter the lane of traffic until assured that all vehicles have yielded and are in a full stopped position. Members are to locate themselves in a safe position to observe the stopped traffic without placing themselves in jeopardy.

  • 3.2.4 Officers shall direct the chauffeur to proceed to the apron of company quarters (sidewalk) and halt apparatus momentarily to check for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

  • 3.2.5 ….When traffic is halted, the officer shall direct the chauffeur to enter traffic lane, pause for remaining members to board the apparatus, and, to proceed with speed consistent with safety.

**Please refer to Safety Bulletin #6 to familiarize yourself with its content.
