UFA Transit Strike Plans

  1. OT Tours Scheduled for Tomorrow
The UFA has just been informed that, contingent upon a transit strike occurring, the Dept will be scheduling OT tours tomorrow, Friday, December 15th, from 5am to 10pm. The Dept has not provided specifics on how it plans on using the additional manpower. Do not perform any duties that would be considered as outside your normal operational responsibilities as a Firefighter. Under no circumstances are members to accept any assignment that involves public transportation duties. The UFA will not support or condone taking on any work normally performed by the Transport Workers Union (TWU), Local 100.

  2. Safety:
It is very likely that due to traffic congestion related to the strike, individual companies could be forced to operate alone at fires for an extended period of time. Please recognize this dangerous situation and act accordingly. Your safety is paramount.

  3. Straight Tours:
It is recommended that members work straight tours, as you may be facing extreme conditions. This will also increase member availability for the Department's increased staffing needs.

  4. Man-for-Man Relief:
Dept. Contingency Plans for Possible Transit Strike state "On duty personnel shall be held until properly relieved by another member of the same rank/title". Members should anticipate having to wait extended periods of time for relief due to delays caused by the transit strike

  5. Details:
Without mass transit, details may be forced to walk for great distances. Anticipate long delays when awaiting relief for details.

  6. UFA Member Support:
UFA Executive Board members are available 24/7 for your emergencies. UFA civilian staff availability may be reduced due to travel restrictions during a transit strike. In order that we may serve our members most urgent needs, the UFA is asking all members to limit administrative requests and calls to a minimum during a strike. Your Delegate should be your first option. They are knowledgeable and can provide answers from their experience and Delegate Manual.

Fraternally.
