Early-morning fires keep FDNY busy

(East Side - WABC, December 28, 2006) - One person was killed when a fire broke out in an apartment on the East Side early Thursday morning.

Police say burns covered 90 percent of the victim's body. The person has not yet been identified.

Authorities say the fire broke out in a fourth floor apartment on East 15th Street just after 6 a.m.

One firefighter reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, firefighters battled another fire inside a marble processing factory in Queens early Thursday.

Authorities say the fire broke out just before 1 a.m. at the large one-story facility on Higgins Street in Flushing.

Flames were reportedly shooting out the windows when firefighters arrived on the scene.

No injuries were reported.
