Firefighters rescued a German shepherd trapped inside a Queens Village house Tuesday night as a two-alarm fire ripped through and destroyed the home.
Only Shadow, the German shepherd, was inside the two-story private home at 95-21 222nd St. when the fire started at around 6:12 p.m., according to a Fire Department spokesman and Dom Cecala, a good friend of the homeowner, Rodney Robinson. The fire was put out at 7:08 p.m.
The spokesman said 25 units containing 106 firefighters tended to the blaze. Two fireman and one other person were taken to North Shore University Hospital for minor injuries.
"When I came outside I saw the flames. My husband went out to break down (Robinson's) door," said neighbor Chevara Delrio. "It went up. It went up fast."
Robinson's home was charred and firefighters could be seen chopping at the home looking for any remnants of the fire. Neighboring houses also were damaged, including Delrio's roof, by the blaze.
Shadow was trapped in the home and but firefighters rescued the dog and massaged it on the home's front lawn. Robinson was seen bringing Shadow into a neighbor's apartment, wrapped in a blanket. Robinson indicated that the dog was going to be all right.
"I'm just glad everybody's all right," said Cecala, who was at a high school basketball game with Robinson's daughter Kelly when the fire erupted. "This is a scary situation."
