An off-duty New York City firefighter was struck and killed early yesterday as he was trying to cross Route 110 in Melville, police said.

David Minerly, 27, of Ozone Park, was struck by a 2003 Hyundai driven by Gerard Ragone, 47, of Mattituck.

Ragone was driving north at 1:55 a.m. when the accident occurred in the area of 525 Route 110, police said.

Minerly was taken to North Shore University Hospital at Plainview by ambulance.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Ragone, who was not charged, was taken to the same hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, police said.

A spokesman for the fire department said that Minerly worked in Queens and had been on the job for three years.

He added that those were the only details the department would release.

An unidentified man who answered the phone at Minerly's address said the family was not commenting.

Ragone's car has been impounded for a safety check.

An investigation is ongoing.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
