Deutsche Deadline Iffy: Mike

NY Post

by DAVID SEIFMAN

There's no guarantee that the Deutsche Bank building at Ground Zero will meet the latest timetable for demolition, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

"I hope it gets down; I think it'll get down, but I can't guarantee it'll get down by the middle of '09," said the mayor.

"There's always something that could go wrong."

Two firefighters died in an August 2007 fire in the ill-fated structure.

Bloomberg explained that developer Larry Silverstein can't proceed with three of his planned towers at Ground Zero until the building is razed.

The mayor defended the role of city agencies that inspected the site before the fatal blaze but conceded that the Fire Department should have had a larger role.

"Clearly, they were not involved enough," he said. "I don't think there's any question about that."
