Queens Firehouse Celebrates 100 Years Of Bravest Service

NY 1

A South Jamaica firehouse celebrated its centennial Wednesday.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and members of Engine Company 303 Ladder Company 126 celebrated 100 years of protecting South Jamaica.

Members past and present packed the firehouse to honor each others service to the community.

Officials say it's one of the most sought-out houses by new recruits.

"There are a lot of very good houses in the city, and this is one of them," said Scoppetta. A busy house, always a terrific job when they respond. They get there in a hurry, they get a fire under control in a hurry."

"Although the community has changed drastically over the last 100 years, the firehouse really hasn't," said FDNY Captain Richard O’Leary. "You know, the firehouse has moved around a couple of times, but we are still here. We are still serving the community and it's really to honor those who have given their lives."

Firefighters dedicated plaques to two of their fallen brothers -- Albert Donovan who died fighting a fire in 1924 and Robert Pettit who died in World War II.
