One Dead, Several Injured in Midtown Apartment Fire

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An elderly man has died and several others have been injured in a fire that broke out at a Midtown apartment Wednesday evening.

Officials say the fire started around 7 p.m. in a second-floor apartment of the 18-story building at 840 8th Avenue and 51st Street.

An elderly man was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital after he was found unconscious in the apartment, fire officials said.

An 85-year-old woman was listed in stable condition after being treated for smoke inhalation. Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries in the fire which was contained to the second floor apartment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
