City fires killed 66 children between 2001 and 2006, making fire the second leading cause of death among kids, according to a report released Thursday by City Hall.
A review of all child fatalities during that time found that 85% of the 43 fires could have been prevented and nearly 90% of the time a parent was in the home when they started.
The study showed that most of the fatal fires occurred in low-income black and Hispanic households. Nearly half happened in multiple-family walkups and 28% occurred in illegal occupancies. The city created a Child Fatality Review Team in 2006 to tackle the issue.
