City Council Overhauls NYC's Fire Code

NY 1

For the first time in 95 years, the City Council voted Wednesday to overhaul the city fire code.

The new 645-page code requires developers to come up with fire safety plans on all construction sites.

The goal is to prevent tragedies such as the one at the former Deutsche Bank Building.

It also calls for rooftop access and the elimination of rooftop obstructions.

"I believe this code will lead to safer buildings, to saving lives and to saving firefighters lives when they go into these buildings," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Going forward, the city will take a look at the code every three years to see if it needs to be updated.
