FDNY Requests Salary Increase

NY 1

A day after it was announced that city police officers will get a raise, the firefighters union requested wage increases Tuesday for its members.

An arbitration panel gave police officers a retroactive ten-percent raise Monday, and boosted the starting salary by 40 percent.

Now, the Uniformed Firefighters Association is arguing for a bump up for its members, too.

"We knew that the Police Benevolent Association was going to fight in arbitration," said UFA President Stephen Cassidy. "We wished them well. They certainly have succeeded and now we're going to go back and make sure the same applies to New York City fire fighters."

The UFA's contract has a clause that says that they are entitled to the same deal police get through arbitration.

However, police did have to make some compromises for higher pay. They will give up vacation days and productivity increases.
