Manhole Explosion Causes Evacuation of Five Buildings

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) A manhole explosion and fire near Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan caused the evacuation of five small apartment buildings, but no injuries.

The explosion happened in a manhole outside 113 East 39th St. near Lexington Avenue at 4:25 a.m. Thursday.

The New York City Fire Department says high carbon monoxide levels in the buildings near the manhole prompted officials to evacuate 28 people until the noxious gas can be cleared.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

The blast is two blocks from 41st Street and Lexington, where a Con Edison steampipe exploded last July, causing one woman to die from a heart attack and injuring 41 others.
