NEW YORK (CBS) - Firefighters say five people are hospitalized after flames raced through a Bronx apartment early Wednesday morning. All of the injuries are described as minor.

The Fire Department says four of those hurt were firefighters.

Witnesses say some residents dashed to their balconies to escape the smoke from the three-alarm blaze in the Honeywell Avenue building. It's near the East Tremont and West Farms neighborhoods.

Flames could be seen through windows on the top floor of the five-story building.

Residents told CBS 2 smoke detectors and sprinklers did not go off.

People yelling outside alerted Mo Townsend of the fire. "It was scary," Townsend said. "As soon as I opened the door, all I could see was smoke."

More than 100 firefighters attacked the blaze for more than an hour and a half before getting it under control at 3:20 a.m.
