High-Rise's Workers Rush To Rescue In East Side Fire

NY Daily News

by Caitlin Millat

Maintenance workers sprang into action on Tuesday, herding residents to safety when a smoky kitchen fire broke out in an eighth-floor apartment on the East Side, officials said.

The staff at the E. 64th St. high-rise was also credited with calming a distraught man and convincing him not to leap from a window in the burning apartment - he was plucked from the flat by firefighters.

Five people, including two firefighters and one building worker, were treated for minor injuries stemming from the blaze.

The workers were reluctant to accept praise from a grateful resident of the building.

"This is our job," said maintenance man Bujar Syla, 21. "We put our all in everyday."
