STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- For the seventh straight year, Engine 157/Ladder 80 won the 18th Annual Staten Island Firefighter March Madness Tournament at the CYO Center in Port Richmond.
The champs won a thrilling 45-43 overtime game with Engine 167/Ladder 87.
Tim Hynes hit a key three-pointer in the extra session and Dan Goffredo had a team-high 15 points.
Goffredo won the Mike Fiore Memorial Tournament MVP award. Gerry Frazier of E-167/L-87 led all scorers with 20 points.
E-157/L-80 lost its first game of the day and fell into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination, 12-team, all-day tournament, which tipped off at 9 a.m. yesterday.
But the squad reeled off five straight victories, including the title game.
All proceeds from the event will be sent to the Firefighter Jeff Giordano Children's Playroom at the Cornell Burn Center.
