A man died last night after he was apparently shot and then set on fire in a Bronx apartment building, law enforcement sources said.

The victim, engulfed in flames, stumbled out of a first-floor apartment at 1255 Adee Avenue in the Eastchester Houses at 11:30 p.m. before collapsing in the hallway, where he was declared dead by arriving firefighters, the sources said.

"He was on fire and fell out into the hallway," one official said of the unidentified victim.

Firefighters battled the stubborn blaze for more than an hour before it was placed under control, an FDNY spokesman said.

Detectives were looking to find out how the victim, who was apparently shot, died.

There were no other injuries in the fire, which was under investigation, the spokesman added.

One neighbor said she smelled smoke from her seventh-floor apartment, but had no idea that one of her neighbors had died.

"That's creepy," said the woman, who asked not to be identified.

"The detectives knocked on my door and one of them said, 'Someone was hurt in the fire. Did you see anything?' I told them I didn't know anything about it," she said.
