NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities say a 5-year-old apparently had been playing with fire before he died, alone, in his family's Queens apartment.
Fire Department spokesman Jim Long said Friday that the fire in Corona, Queens, which killed Jason Guallpa has been declared accidental.
The New York Police Department arrested Jason's 24-year-old brother, who was supposed to be babysitting, on a child endangerment charge. It was not clear whether he has a lawyer.
Long said there were smoke alarms in the apartment, but it's not known whether they were working when the fire occurred on Thursday.
Firefighters found the little boy between a wall and TV.
Newsday said the distraught mother recalled Jason telling her: "Mom, I want to be a firefighter when I grow up. That's what I want to be, Mommy.''
