Bronx Teen Rescued After Falling Off Jetty

NY 1

A Bronx teenager is recovering today after getting stuck in a jetty near Orchard Beach last night.

The boy was pinned between the rocks about 200 yards off shore. The 14 year old was not submerged, but was face down, repeatedly splashed with freezing water from the rising tide.

Firefighters from a nearby firehouse jumped to the boy's rescue after he fell, dealing with extreme conditions once they got there.

"From the water and trying to make our way out there, it was difficult to see, you know," said Tom Maloney of the FDNY. "It's difficult to keep your balance, too. The rocks were slippery and we couldn't see anything in the water really, so, really couldn't see the victim himself, just the guys around him working on him."

It took about 20 minutes to extricate the boy, who was unresponsive when rescuers first arrived. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for observation.
