While most fans watched Super Bowl XLII in either their home, friend's house, bar, restaurant or club, 25 members of the FDNY, along with actor Jon Voight, traveled to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington to sit side-by-side with soldiers wounded on the battlefield.
Super Bowl Sunday started with a luncheon at the Fisher House for families of injured soldiers, paid for by money donated to the Capt. Patrick J. Brown Memorial Foundation (www.paddybrownfoundation.org).
After lunch, the firemen visited wounded warriors at Walter Reed, followed by a pre-Super Bowl bash at the Malogne House for patients, family and staff. An Elvis impersonator (Capt. Andy 'Woody' Woodall of Raleigh, N.C.) and three former USO girls from "United We Sing" entertained.
The night was capped off with a big win for the New York Giants. FDNY Lt. Mike Hyland told fellow Lt. Mike (The Tree) Galgano why this was so special: "It's nice to see the soldiers forget their problems, even for just a day."
