New York City firefighters rescued a construction worker 20 feet up on the Throgs Neck Bridge Wednesday afternoon after he was injured in a scaffolding accident, fire officials said.

The accident, which occurred just before 2 p.m., shut down traffic in both directions on the span for roughly 30 minutes as New York City Fire Department ladder and rescue crews brought the injured man down, fire officials said.

The man, whose name was not released, was part of a small crew of workers who were doing maintenance work on the bridge, officials said.

He was injured when scaffolding gave way, hitting him below the knees and leaving him unable to walk, they said, and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.
