Firefighter Who Fell 3 Stories from Bucket Leaves Hospital

1010 Wins

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A firefighter who suffered a near-fatal fall while fighting a fire in the Bronx last month was cheered on by his colleagues as he left the hospital on Monday.

"This is the best firehouse....they took care of my family the last three weeks, and I'm just looking forward to a speedy recovery," said Brian Smith.

Smith, 43, who was assigned to Ladder Co. 44, fell three stories from a ladder bucket while fighting a fire on Shakespeare Avenue in November.

Smith broke several bones in the fall including his C1 vertebra -- the one that regulates arm and leg movement.

Doctors say Smith had multiple injuries to his spine and lungs, but ensure a speedy recovery. Smith's Fire Captain said his disposition will see him through.

Smith is being taken to a center in Rockland County for rehab and hopes to be home in time for Christmas.
