Riverhead: Brothers Convicted

NY Times

by COREY KILGANNON

The third of three brothers was convicted yesterday of gang assault in the beating of a veteran city firefighter returning from a Sept. 11 memorial service last year.

On Wednesday, Darrell and Darian Taylor, 26, who are twins, were found guilty of first-degree assault in the attack in Mastic Beach on Firefighter Richard Berkhout, a 13-year veteran.

Yesterday, their half brother, Christopher Robinson, who was tried separately, was found guilty in Suffolk County Supreme Court. Firefighter Berkhout, 47, was walking with his wife in Mastic Beach on the evening of Sept. 11, 2006, and yelled to the men to slow their car.

The men got out and beat him, prosecutors said.
