The condition of a firefighter injured when he fell two stories from a ladder bucket while battling a Bronx blaze has been upgraded from serious to stable, hospital officials said yesterday.

Brian Smith of Ladder 44 in the Bronx, a 13-year fire department veteran, underwent a battery of tests for multiple fractures to his spine, according to officials.

It is not known how Smith fell from the fire engine bucket that was being used to put out flames at the Shakespeare Avenue fire Sunday afternoon. The FDNY is investigating.

"This has been very tough on the family," said a fire official. Smith is being treated at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.

Firefighters responded to the first floor of a burning apartment building at 1350 Shakespeare Ave. at 4:19 p.m. The fire was under control by 4:58 p.m.
