A fire ripped through two floors of a Lower Manhattan skyscraper early Thursday morning, sending glass raining onto the street below and injuring more than a half-dozen firefighters.
Firefighters were called shortly after 12:30 a.m. on the 29th floor of the 40-story building on Pine Street. The building houses insurance companies, money management firms and other businesses.
Only the 29th and 30th floors of the building were damaged in the blaze. The rest of the building remains open for business.
A witness says it was a frightening scene.
"I was on the third level of the parking garage and I was told to come out of the building, and it turned out to be a fire up on I believe the 27th floor," said a witness. "And I came out to the street and flames were shooting out the window, and I almost got hit by some flying glass on the street there."
"On arrival I transmitted a third alarm due the severity of the fire,†said FDNY Deputy Chief James Daly. "We had falling glass on Maiden Lane, which we immediately closed down. And units made an aggressive push with the hand line and they put the fire out in pretty short order."
Around 160 firefighters were called in to battle the blaze. No civilian injuries were reported, but eight firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The FDNY says it was an electrical fire.
