Help Sought for Children With Rare Disease

Newsday

AP - A retired New York City firefighter is seeking help for his granddaughter and other children born with a rare, painful disease.

Owen Farley's granddaughter, 5-year-old Grace Peshkur of Holtsville, N.Y., has an ailment called EB -- epidermolysis (EP uh der MAH luh sis ) bullosa (buh LOH suh).

A victim's skin is compared to butterfly wings because it's so fragile that it sloughs off with a mere touch. The child must be wrapped in gauze to protect her body and lives with excruciating pain.

Farley, a former FDNY battalion chief, and supporters promoted their funding and awareness campaign on Wednesday.
