Bravest Safety Push

Sen. Chuck Schumer called Monday for rigorous federal testing of a safety device linked to firefighter deaths and injuries.

The New York Democrat said the Personal Alert Safety System had already cost the life of city firefighter Thomas Brick.

The device worn by firefighters is designed to sound an alarm when a firefighter has stopped moving. Schumer said 15 firefighters, including Brick, have died nationwide when PASS devices have failed under routine heat and water conditions.

A father of two young children, Brick died in December 2003 battling a four-alarm blaze in an upper Manhattan mattress factory.
