Fire erupted on the roof of a posh upper East Side townhouse early yesterday, injuring two firefighters.

The 6:30 a.m. blaze burned on the roof of the 10,000-square-foot limestone mansion at 11E.74th St., off Fifth Ave., for about 30 minutes before 60 firefighters were able to bring it under control, fire officials said.

At the fire's peak, flames climbed to 8 feet, a witness said. The firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation at Lenox Hill Hospital and released.

There were no other victims and no evacuations. Area doormen said the building, which reportedly once housed actress Peggy Lipton, is being renovated.

"I saw fire up on the roof," said Eddie Ruhani, 26, a doorman at a neighboring building

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The building went on sale for $35 million just 17 days ago.
