Several firefighters who met with prosecutors investigating the deadly Deutsche Bank building fire reportedly ignored department orders to meet with city lawyers first.
According to the New York Times, last week the firefighters and their union lawyers talked to prosecutors about the August 18th fire, without stopping first at the corporation counsel's office, as they'd been asked to do.
Prosecutors are looking into the deaths of two firefighters at the site, as well as the conduct of the contractors and city agencies involved.
The Times says the city has tried to involve its own lawyers in a high-profile investigation before, in connection with the deadly Staten Island ferry crash in 2003. At that time, the district attorney's office said the city's actions had a chilling effect on city workers that prosecutors wanted to interview.
