New York City unions practiced their demonstration skills this morning in the rain. Union reps from the teachers, police and firefighters unions picketed outside Madison Square Garden where the Republican National Convention is to be held at the end of August. The unions say this is the beginning of ten days of "informational picketing" about their stalled contract talks with the city. P-B-A President Pat Lynch says it's been two years since the police and firefighters have had a contract. He says the teachers have been without a contract for one year. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the Uniformed Firefighters Association and the United Federation of Teachers are all seeking raises and better benefits. The union leaders say their contract problems will get national attention if they picket when the Republican convention is in town. The Republican National Convention will be from August 30th to September Second.
