Toys "R" Us Treats Kids Of Fallen Firefighters

NY 1

Toys "R" Us in Times Square opened its doors to bring holiday cheer to the families of New York's Bravest Sunday.

More than 200 widows and 600 children of fallen firefighters filled the store as part of the annual Widows' and Children's Holiday Party.

Families were greeted by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Yankees Pitcher Mariano Rivera, dozens of costumed characters and Santa Claus.

Family members say the event helps them remember and celebrate their loved ones.

"This is actually the high point for my children every year to come and be with other families that have experienced the loss that they've experienced, but it also makes them feel so special that people care so much," said one mother.

"It makes them feel special. It makes us feel special, and Toys "R" Us with the Fire Department, in combination, just helps us fill that moment with special memories," added another.

The holiday party is hosted by the Uniformed Firefighters Association.
