by the issue of just how long she will stay in office. NY1's Gary Anthony Ramsay filed the following report.
One of the stops on Hillary Clinton's victory lap on a chilly, wet, Wednesday was a warm reception at a midtown firehouse. The junior senator said part of her thanks to the union that supported her bid, will be to push for better healthcare for first responders. "I came here this morning really to thank this firehouse and really all of our first responders who take care of us everyday," said Clinton. That is just one part though, of a huge to-do list she said awaits Democrats who seized control of the House of Representatives in Tuesday's election. At the top of that list is Iraq, and if the shift in power at home will change U.S. policy on the ground? "The president, the vice president, the secretary of defense, everybody wants us to do well," said Clinton. "We want to take care of our guys; we want to do the best job we can. Let's work together to get that done. That's what I'm hoping happens." But joining Clinton with reporters and firefighters in the cramped room was that old question about the Presidential campaign of 2008. Again she ignored the beast, still sounding like the New York Senator the people chose her to be. "This has been a wonderful experience for me to travel around our state, and work with great people like the ones you see standing here and do my very best to represent them," said Clinton. And while some of those people would like to see her stay, others think she is already looking elsewhere. "She could go anywhere," said one New Yorker. "She's a very smart lady, but I'd like to see her ride out her term." "I think she has her eyes on the presidency and I think she'll do well," added another New Yorker. Meanwhile, in Washington she got some praise from a unlikely person. "Senator Clinton ran a very strong race, but it appears to me she ran just on the Senate race," said President George W. Bush. "She wanted to show people she had the capacity to help others win." With polls showing Clinton as a favorite among the likely candidates to run for president it does not appear that question will be going away anytime soon.
