A fast-moving fire in the Bronx early Monday morning killed a man and injured eight others, including firefighters. The flames broke out at about 1:30 a.m. at a three-story house at 28-19 Decatur in Bedford Park and spread to the building next door before it was extinguished, a half hour later. Raymond Ramirez, 53, died in the fire. Six firefighters and two civilians also suffered minor injuries. The landlords, who live on the ground floor, tried to go into Ramirez’s apartment to save him, but the flames were too strong. Firefighters arrived in minutes, but they couldn’t get inside, either. “The Fire Department tried to go in, but flames had engulfed the apartment completely,” said Jose Garcia, a neighbor. “They said they got pushed out, literally, by the fire.” Ramirez emigrated from the Dominican Republic seven years ago with his mother and seven siblings. The family was already grieving the death of their mother last year. “He was a very good person,” said his brother, Julio Feliz. “I think he smoked a lot, but I don’t know what’s going on.” The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
