The unions representing the city’s police officers, firefighters and teachers are threatening to hold protests during the Republican National Convention next month if they don’t get new contracts with raises and better benefits.
Members of the unions have been holding what they call “informational pickets” outside Madison Square Garden, where the convention will be held.
On “Inside City Hall” on NY1 Tuesday, the president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, Steve Cassidy, and the head of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Pat Lynch, said they can’t guarantee the picketing will end when GOP delegates come to town.
When asked if they would disrupt the convention, Cassidy said, “I’m not willing to say it right now.”
“What we need to do,” Lynch said, “is have the mayor come to the table and negotiate with us. He is not doing that. This will take us where we need to go.”
The city's labor commissioner says protests during the convention would violate a deal negotiated between the Central Labor Council, the convention host committee and labor leaders.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city doesn't have enough money to grant raises without offsetting productivity increases and givebacks.
