A Brooklyn rabbi whose wife was killed in a fire last year filed a lawsuit against the FDNY Monday.

Lillian Hecht died January 15th, 2004 in a fire in her Ocean Parkway home. Rabbi Abraham Hecht says he believes his wife would still be alive if the nearest firehouse had been open that day. The firehouse was closed so that firefighters could get mandatory physicals.

Hecht is suing for an undisclosed amount in damages, but he says, more importantly, he wants the city to stagger its physical exam policy so that stations don't have to be closed.

The fire union agrees.

“They don't have to close a company for a day. They don't have to close companies permanently, and they shouldn’t close them on a daily basis,” said Uniformed Firefighters Association President Stephen Cassidy. “They are playing Russian roulette with people’s lives.”

The Fire Department said in a statement: “The FDNY carefully manages our resources to ensure that all communities have adequate fire protection coverage. In order to ensure the safety of our firefighters and the communities we serve, medical evaluations as well as in-service training are a necessity."
