But, as the smoke filled the sixth-floor hallway of her Park Hill apartment complex, Firefighter John Scarangello found the 32-year-old when he heard some faint grunts and groans coming through the smoke.

Standing before his fellow firefighters, Scarangello, of Engine Company 153 in Stapleton, was honored this morning as the Advance's Firefighter of the Month for the life-saving rescue.
