FATAL FIRE KILLS 1 IN MIDLAND BEACH

SI Advance

A 51-year-old man was killed and two firefighters were injured in a suspicious fire early this morning in Midland Beach.

The fire broke out in a one-story bungalow at 432 Hunter Ave. at 3:23 a.m., according to a Fire Department spokesman.

The civilian, who apparently rushed into the flames, was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, with burns covering most of his body, the spokesman said.

He died a short time after arriving at the hospital.

His name was not released this morning and it was not known if he lived in the Hunter Avenue home.

The firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the spokesman said.

This morning, the home and a black car parked in front were surrounded by yellow crime scene tape and were under police guard.

A police officer outside the home called it a crime scene.

There was minimal damage to the rear of the white-shingled home.
