Road racing comes to the South Shore next Sunday with the fifth annual Jeff's Run being contested at Mt. Loretto. The 5K run has a 10 a.m. start.

The race honors the memory of Jeff Giordano, a NYC firefighter who lost his life in the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. Giordano, an avid runner, was also the vice president of the New York Firefighter's Burn Center Foundation.

Runners will follow a course along Hylan Blvd. that appears flat, but there are many subtle upgrades. In addition, tired athletes will make their way up a 300-yard incline to the finish.

Last year's race saw Shawn Williams hold off T.J. Byrnes in 18 minutes, 1.3 seconds. Terry Ballou (20:21.0) won by more than a minute over Amanda Tripodi.

Prizes go to top male and female finishers, as well as to the top three in ten year age categories. Additional awards will be presented to top Clydesdale and Athenas finishers. This year, youth divisions have been broken down into 10-and-under, 11-13, 14-16, and 17-19.

Post-entries will be taken up until race time, with entry fee $20.

There's a real family atmosphere at this race, with plenty of food, liquid refreshment, face-painting, and much more after the race
