A day of mid-summer fun is in store for local runners on Saturday, when the third annual Ladder 5 Cross Country Classic and Summer Festival is held at Wolfe's Pond Park. Starting time for the 5K run 10 a.m. The race honors the fallen firefighters of Ladder 5 who perished in the World Trade Center terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, with race proceeds going to the Thomas Elsasser Fund. This race attracts many because of the variety of terrain. Runners will race over grass, some rugged trails, and a stretch along the beach. Prizes will be awarded to top male and female finishers, age group leaders, firefighters, law enforcement personnel, lifeguards, and military personnel. There are many extras on this day of fun. There's live music, kid's races, barbecue, water games and rides, a climbing tower, and an obstacle course for the kids. Runners may pre-enter on Wednesday from 7-10 p.m. at the Grant City Tavern, at the corner of S. Railroad and Fremont Avenue. Post-registration will take place on the field, prior to the race. Post-entry fee is $25.
