by ADVANCE STAFF REPORT
It was just another day on the job for Dan Cavanaugh of West Brighton -- a day that included rescuing a Manhattan man from his burning apartment. The firefighter from Ladder Co. 10 in Lower Manhattan climbed to the 30th floor of 375 South End Ave., where smoke was pouring from a window. Cavanaugh said he and his company broke into the apartment and split up to search the burning blackness. "I found him in the kitchen lying face down on the floor," Cavanaugh said. "I started to drag him out and that was it." The victim was rushed to NYU Downtown Hospital, where he was in critical condition from smoke inhalation. Two firefighters from Engine Co. 6 suffered minor injuries battling the blaze. Ladder 10's Lt. Anthony Madio credited Cavanaugh with the rescue, but the firefighter shared the spotlight. "I knew I had a good company behind me and that's all that matters," he said. Cavanaugh joined the FDNY in 2002 and was assigned to Ladder 10. He's a graduate of Monsignor Farrell High School in Oakwood, and earned his bachelor of science degree from St. John's University, Grymes Hill.
