by a candle left burning in their first-floor apartment, officials said.

Diogenes Felix, 44, was still recovering at Jacobi Medical Center from burns suffered during his rescue efforts after the fire broke out in the apartment at 2076 Bronx Park Road, said hospital spokesman Michael Heller.

His daughter Sarah perished in the Friday morning blaze, although Felix was able to rescue his 6-year-old daughter Mary from the flames. She was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell in critical condition with burns over 60 percent of her body, authorities said.

The hospital, at the request of the family, would provide no additional details on her condition Saturday. The cause of the accidental fire was a candle left burning overnight in the home, fire officials said.

The fire, which burned for a little over 30 minutes, was brought under control at about 3:50 a.m. Friday. Two other family members suffered minor injuries in the blaze.
