Your article "All fired up over election" [News, Oct. 5] seemed to have very selective, handpicked and one-sided information about the Uniformed Firefighters Association members' decision to endorse and support President George W. Bush for reelection. Most important, your story excludes significant and easily attainable facts and statistics. For instance, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters, 87 percent of its members "identify their overarching political philosophy as moderate conservative." Further, 44 percent of professional firefighters in America identify themselves as Republican and 40 percent as Democrat. So for your story to portray the UFA as going against the grain in endorsing Bush for reelection is just not accurate. At a recent union meeting of more than 400, only two members expressed their opposition about this endorsement. Those two members advocated neutrality rather than support of John Kerry. We are proud to support Bush's re-election. This is an election with one dominant issue for firefighters: national security. Having suffered the devastating losses our firefighters encountered on Sept. 11, our members are certain that Bush is far and away the best candidate to fight the terrorists wherever they hide and to keep America safe. Stephen J. Cassidy Editor's note: The writer is president of Uniformed Firefighters Association.
