Youth tumbles down air shaft

Newsday

A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured after falling 50 feet down an air shaft in the Bronx late Saturday, police said.

The unidentified teen was visiting friends at 2024 Ryer Ave. in the Morris Heights section and had gone to the roof of the three-story building, where the shaft is open, neighbors said.

It was not clear yesterday how the boy fell down the 3-foot-wide shaft, but police said they believed it was accidental.

Jenny Sanchez, 27, who lives on the second floor, said the boy's friends banged on her door shortly after she heard the boy fall. "When he fell down, he was kicking the window" in the shaft on the first floor, she said. After firefighters rescued the boy and put him on a stretcher, "He couldn't even move."

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
