The Fire Department will hold a funeral service tomorrow for a firefighter who died on Sept. 11, 2001, but whose family did not claim the remains until this week. The remains of Firefighter Keithroy Maynard, 30, had been identified earlier, but were held at the medical examiner's office until his family picked them up Wednesday, Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the office, said yesterday. She said the remains of several previously identified victims had been picked up in recent months as the office indicated that it had identified as many body parts as it could with existing technology. Maynard's mother, Pearl, said yesterday that the family had a memorial service in November 2001, but she did not want to hold a funeral service until all DNA testing was exhausted. "You want to be sure they have identified as many parts as possible and not just a part here and a part there," she said. Keithroy Maynard was assigned to Engine Co. 33 on Great Jones Street in Manhattan. The company lost seven of its members on 9/11. Pearl Maynard said Keithroy's twin brother, Kevin, became a firefighter in Houston after 9/11. Kevin Maynard will be flying here for the service at Church of the Master in Morningside Heights tomorrow, his mother said. The medical examiner's office has identified 1,591 of the 2,749 people thought to be killed in the World Trade Center attack, Borakove said. The office began notifying families in February that DNA matches and other scientific methods had been exhausted but the effort to make identifications had not been abandoned.
