Long Island firefighter assaulted on Sept. 11; 3 brothers held

Newsday

MASTIC BEACH, N.Y.- AP --- Three brothers, including twins, assaulted an off-duty firefighter on Sept. 11 as he walked home with his wife after spending the day in remembrance of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks, police said.

Darrell and Darien Taylor, both 28, were arrested at the scene Monday and were charged with assault, Suffolk County police said. The other brother, Christopher J. Robinson, 25, was arrested Thursday, police said.

Robinson had been released from an upstate prison, the Cayuga Correctional Facility, on the day of the firefighter's beating after serving four years for assault, said police, who confirmed he was the Taylors' brother but couldn't explain why his surname is different.

The firefighter, Richard Berkhout, 46, and his wife were walking near their home when they were confronted by three men in a vehicle who got out and started beating him, police said. He was taken to a hospital with a fractured skull and brain hemorrhaging.

There was no published telephone listing for the Taylors in Mastic Beach, and police said they likely still were in jail. Robinson was jailed and was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
