A New York City firefighter who spent Monday with his wife "in remembrance" of terrorist victims of Sept. 11, 2001, was walking near his Mastic Beach home with his wife when he became the victim of an assault, police said.

The victim, Richard Berkhout, 46, received a fractured skull, a brain hemorrhage, and numerous lacerations and contusions to his head and face, police said. He remains hospitalized at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

Two men, 28-year-old twin brothers Darrell and Darian Taylor, were arrested at the scene Monday and charged with second-degree assault.

Police said Berhout and his wife, Margaret, were walking near their home when they became involved in a verbal confrontation with three men in a passing car on Monday. The three stopped the car, got out and assaulted Berkhout, police said.

Police asked that anyone with information concerning the third suspect contact Seventh Squad detectives at 852-8752 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
