City firefighters, mindful of the help they got after 9/11, donated $100,000 Thursday to help firefighters and their families affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The city has already sent teams of firefighters trained in handling disasters south, and the Uniformed Firefighters Association said it wanted to give its personal help to fellow firefighters in the area.
"Following the Sept. 11 attacks, firefighters from throughout the nation were there to support New York in our time of need, and we are there for our brother firefighters from the Gulf Coast States affected by this horrible natural disaster," Stephen Cassidy, union president, wrote in a statement.
The donation goes to the International Association Firefighters, which has set up a relief fund for its members in the affected areas.
"As these members continue to serve their communities on continuous 24-hour shifts, we need to do our part to serve them," Harold Schaitberger, association general president, wrote in a statement.
