Disgruntled police and firefighters continued their labor version of guerrilla theater yesterday as they followed Mayor Michael Bloomberg around the city. Members of the unions representing the two uniformed services are united in their anger over the lack of a new labor contract and have been conducting the "pop-up" demonstrations for the past month. Off-duty police in blue T-shirts and off-duty firefighters in yellow ones began yesterday's protests in late morning with an appearance outside Shea Stadium. The protesters were kept far away from the entrance used by Bloomberg's entourage as he joined convention delegates inside the ballpark. The demonstrators next popped up outside Gracie Mansion in early afternoon while the mayor was hosting a luncheon in honor of congressional spouses. The protesters were scheduled to finish the day outside a midtown reception for Republicans. The unions have been scheduling the demonstrations at the last moment in an attempt to surprise the mayor, and it was unclear whether they would conduct more pop-ups today. While the uniformed workers have their own gripes, they will be joining other workers today at a rally near Madison Square Garden to protest Republican policies on unions and workers.
