Newsday

by affixing an "11" to the right-field walls at both World Series stadiums.

The "11" specifically commemorates New York fire academy student Mike Cammarata, 22, who was last seen after rushing into the World Trade Center after the attacks.

On Sept. 11, Cammarata was at the Ladder Co. 11 firehouse on Manhattan's Lower East Side when he called his family and left a message that he was going to the burning towers.

Wearing No. 11, Cammarata played right field in the 1991 series for the South Shore Little League from Staten Island, N.Y.

The announcement of the memorial came Saturday, before the Mid-Island team from Staten Island played their first game at this year's series.

"In the years to come, people will ask, 'What is the No. 11 in right field for?"' Little League president Stephen Keener said in a statement. "We will be able to tell them the story of a Little Leaguer who became a true hero for all of us."

The simple placard has "11" in white block numbers on top of a black background.
