Man, 94, dies in blaze

Newsday

A 94-year-old man, a longtime Manhattan resident, was killed early yesterday in a fire in his building, police said.

Nicholas DeCurtis was apparently asleep when a candle ignited the fire at 78 Christopher St. in Greenwich Village around 2 a.m., officials said.

Sixty firefighters responded to the scene at the five-story brick building and got the blaze under control by 2:40 a.m.

Investigators said they believe DeCurtis was not burned in the fire but may have gone into cardiac arrest.

Neighbors said he was a nice man who was, at one time, being looked after by his daughter.
